Final Fantasy producer teases ‘a big announcement’ unrelated to FFVII

Final Fantasy’s producer has told fans to expect a “big announcement” in the near future.

The tease was made in Yoshinori Kitase’s New Year message, in which he claimed Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth development was “picking up speed”, but that he also had significant news to share unrelated to FF7.

“Final Fantasy XVI is set to release this year, which means Yoshi-P needs your support now more than ever,” the message reads.

“Also! Development is picking up speed on the title I’m producing, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. I’m sure many of your collective imaginations are running wild trying to picture how we’ll recreate some of the game’s most iconic scenes, and we’ll have more to share about that when the time is right.

“There’s also another big announcement unrelated to FFVII that I can’t say anything about just yet. Rest assured we’re working hard to make sure 2023 is the most exciting year yet.”

Thanks to 2021’s huge leak of unannounced games on Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming service, it’s strongly suspected that two unannounced Final Fantasy games planned for release are a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and a remake of Final Fantasy 9.

Many other games on the leaked list have since been released, including a PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, a Chrono Cross remaster and many other titles from other third-party publishers.

Last month Square Enix confirmed that the franchises’ next big entry, Final Fantasy 16, will release for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023.

The trailer marked the second time it’s been claimed that the game will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive for at least six months, following a Sony marketing video stating the same thing.

The confirmation potentially paves the way for a PC port of Final Fantasy 16 in 2024. To date, the title has only been announced for PlayStation 5.
