Immortality On Xbox Game Pass Is Getting Absolutely Incredible Reviews So Far

Sam Barlow’s follow-up to Her Story, Immortality, arrives on Xbox Game Pass today (August 30th) and it’s getting very, very good reviews so far. We absolutely loved our time with this narrative-driven interactive experience, so much so we gave it an “outstanding” score!

Here’s a quick look at our review, along with a selection of other critics’ opinions so far:

“Immortality is easily Sam Barlow’s best game to date and, when you consider the delights he’s served up previously, well, you get an idea of just how good this one really is.

It’s a dazzling display from any angle you to choose to admire it; top-notch acting, brilliant writing, a core mechanic that’s complex but carried off with style and grace, intuitive controls that draw you into your role…just remember to avoid spoilers, dive into the mystery of Marissa Marcel completely unsullied, and you’re in for one of the most exquisite gaming experiences of this year, or any other, by quite some distance.”

“The acting by everyone involved is sublime, and the way everything connects is masterful. Her Story was great, but this is on another level. I was captivated from the beginning, and left with my jaw on the floor by the end. There are secrets everywhere, and if you’re willing to spend time finding them, the rewards come in abundance.”

“Immortality ambitiously succeeds at evolving the formats introduced in Her Story and Telling Lies to offer some of Sam Barlow’s best work yet and one of gaming’s most well-justified open-world experiences. Bolstered by some fantastic performances and a compelling mystery to uncover, it’s engrossing and engaging from beginning to end.”

“Immortality is one beautiful headf***. Once again Barlow has surpassed himself, with this game surpassing anything else that’s come before it in the genre.”

IGN (8/10)

“Immortality is a thoroughly mesmerizing mystery and one of the most surprising video game stories I’ve played through this year. Its image-based search tool might make its actual investigating feel noticeably dumbed down compared to that of Her Story and Telling Lies, but the credibility of its faked film productions, the powerful performances of its cast, and its regularly confronting, David Lynchian discoveries kept me captivated for its nine-hour duration.”

“Like Telling Lies and Her Story, things you think you’ve come to understand will routinely be undermined by information you learn as you continue digging. Each recontextualization feels like a startling end to a chapter in a great book. Is this a crime drama? A horror story? A love story? It’s a bit of all three — and more — at different times. It plays like most literature reads, in that it’s more concerned with its underlying themes than its plot.”

Well, that’s a pretty amazing reception thus far then! Immortality currently sits at a fantastic 92 on Metacritic for Xbox Series X|S, which no-doubt makes it one of the most critically acclaimed Xbox titles of the year so far. Remember, this one goes straight into Game Pass too – there’s no reason not to try it!
