Last of Us director on a potential Part 3: ‘I think there’s more story to tell’

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has seemingly hinted at plans for a third entry in its The Last of Us series.

While not confirming if The Last of Us Part 3 is coming or not, series director and co-writer Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think there’s more story to tell.”

Druckmann said in April 2021 that a story outline had been written for a potential third game in the series, but that it wasn’t currently being developed.

His latest comment on a third chapter in the story came during an interview focused on HBO’s upcoming Last of Us TV adaptation, which premieres this month.

The show’s debut season will cover the events of the first Last of Us, which was released at the tail end of the PS3 generation in June 2013, and Druckmann hinted that its second will cover The Last of Us Part 2, which debuted for PS4 seven years later.

“We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” he told THR.

According to the report, the TV show is overall highly faithful to The Last of Us but will include “some radical changes to the game’s story that will shock and perhaps challenge fans”, including one involving the character Bill, who is played by Nick Offerman.

The show, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as lead characters Joel and Ellie, premieres on January 15 on HBO Max and a day later on Sky in the UK.

“People see bad adaptations and it adds credence to the idea that games are childish,” Druckmann said. “I love the idea that someone could watch this and be moved by it and then be like, ‘Wait, that’s based on the video game?’”

Naughty Dog also today shared new concept art for its upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer game.

Featuring its own story and a brand new cast of characters, more details about the “ambitious” title will be revealed later this year, Druckmann said.

Sony recently confirmed that the PC version of The Last of Us Part 1 will be released on March 3, 2023, via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
