Resident Evil 4 Remake won’t remove the island section, it’ll improve on it

It was one of 5 changes that had kept fans on the fence about the remake. The island in Resident Evil 4 is the final section of the game in which you fight against a zombified military wearing red berets and even gatling guns, and thankfully it will be in the remake. A few month’s ago a theory that said the area had been removed (since it didn’t seem to appear in the collector’s edition physical map) gathered some strength, but the game’s director, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, recently spoke about it in the latest issue of Edge magazine.

In said pages, Hirabayashi explained that the team was divided in three groups, with each building a different part of the game: the village, the castle, and the island. This allowed them to be more exhaustive while creating each segment of the game and adding more detail that they could have done ever before. The director also explained that once they put everything together, they worked to make it a homogenous experience and made changes to adapt the experience with modern sensibilities (talking about movement and aiming improvements, and other game mechanic improvements).

The island zone, full of air support raids, bombardments, and giant machines, is for many people the first hints of the road Capcom would take in the following entries of the franchise, Resident Evil 5 and 6, so it being cut wasn’t so bad for many people. In hindsight, it’s a part of the game that seemed extremely cheesy as an ending to RE4, but it also has plenty of memorable moments, like Krauser’s fight and the freezer room filled with Regenerators (one of the most terrifying enemies in the entire game). They’re absence had fans worried, but it seems like they can rest easy now: The island is in the remake, and now we only need to find out what’s changed and what’s new.

To do so, we’ll have to wait until March 24, 2023, when Resident Evil 4 Remake launches on PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
