Tribeca Festival announces line-up of game selections

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Returning for its 21st year, the Tribeca Festival is debuting an exciting collection of film, audio and for the second year, games.

On Tuesday, the festival announced its selection of video games which demonstrate phenomenal storytelling, art, and innovation through interactive experiences.

“This year’s selections represent the incredible range of how games prove to be a powerful form of storytelling,” said Vice President of Tribeca Games and Immersive Casey Baltes. “We’re continuing to expand how audiences and players interact with games, not only as entertainment but as one of the most impactful cultural mediums.”

Games will be available online or to demo in person from June 11-19. Those able to join in person will be the first to experience a playable Games Gallery which features demos, art, and artifacts for this year’s selected games which will be hosted at Tribeca Festival’s hub at Spring Studios on 50 Varick Street.

One of the selected games is an interactive thriller called “Immortality” by renowned video game writer and designer Sam Barlow. The game explores the legend of Marissa Marcel, a film star who disappeared, through her unreleased work. The festival will feature a live play through of the game.

Other selected games include “American Arcadia” where players must keep their popularity ratings up in a  70s retro-futuristic metropolis with live 24/7 broadcast and “Venba” which is a narrative cooking game centered around an Indian mom who immigrates to Canada with her family in the 1980s.

All of the nine games will be up for the Tribeca Games Award which honors an unreleased game for its excellence in art and storytelling through design, artistic mastery, and highly immersive worlds.

Aside from games, other festival highlights include world premieres of documentaries on Jennifer Lopez, Al Sharpton and rapper Lil Baby as well as a podcast series called the End Up about a tilted near-future where terminal cancer patients who wish to end their suffering must attend a weeklong boot camp.

Festival passes are on sale now. Game demo sessions, both virtual and in-person, may be reserved starting May 2, 2022.
