Xbox NT3 (2020) review: The best one yet

Microsoft has been making game controllers for more than 20 years and has settled on a basic formula. Thus, the latest revision of the Xbox controller isn’t as much a revolution as an evolution. The Xbox One controller makes use of Xbox One technology. Although only the Xbox One version is available in one-time, it does not run into the Xbox One computer. The result is an excellent, well-supported controller and you should think whatever you think you’re playing.

With a look, we can see.

Xbox Wireless Controller (2020): Design and build quality.

If you have owned a Xbox controller for the past decade, the latest revision won’t sound familiar. Microsoft tweaked the controller’s geometry so that the accessories you had for older controllers couldn’t fit perfectly. This, and some millimeters shaved off the triggers and shoulder buttons give the 2020 refresh a less bulky body.

The wireless controller underside has a dot texture to keep grip on a large gaming table.

The grips on the top are smooth. The underside and the triggers have a light dot texture to make the rest of your hands secure. The bottom edge of the table sports the standard Xbox extension connector as well as a microphone-jack. In the top of the nebula, we see a key change: a USB-C port, which can replace the USB-C port on older controllers. This newer standard is more durable and makes it easier to connect to non-Xbox hardware. I also applaud Microsoft for the addition of an 8-foot USB-A-to-C cable to the controller.

The thumbsticks are asymmetrical, with the left and the left stick the higher the right. Both of them have convex tops. The first-generation Xbox Elite Controller has one convex stick that suits better fine aiming. The d-pad is the left side and the ABXY button is the right side. This unit’s d-pad has become a long-overdue upgrade. A controlled section is now shown in each of the cardinal directions, and the diagonal direction is easier to take. A dangle in the rim collects skin oils and dust, requiring frequent cleaning, to keep it looking tidy.

Experienced trigger designs from other controllers.

All the buttons, along with the bumpers and the triggers, are easy to press without shifting the grip, but there are little buttons and controls that are usually placed toward the middle. The traditional view, menu, and the Xbox/power button are present. However, when the 2020 revision is complete, a share button has been added.

The battery door is on the back, and it’s the bag is empty from the box. It can still run on batteries that use batteries like a rotor, but a rechargeable battery pack is available for $30, which is a substantial fraction of the controllers $60 price tag. Using this accessory, you can recharge the battery by using USB-C. Aside from the cable and connection, it’s only for the remote. Sonys DualSense hinges on a built-in rechargeable battery.

Switching to Xbox One (2020): Experience and knowledge based on your needs.

Microsoft says that the gamepad is faster than all its predecessors when connected to the Series X or S console, thanks to a feature called Dynamic Latency Input. This system polls the controller more frequently to get your presses right away. Even when connected with other devices via Bluetooth, the controller was perfectly responsive.

The share button is useful if you want to reach it in the dead centre of the gamepad. On the Xbox 360, a single tap lets us take a screenshot of a film and a long-press record a 15 second video clip. Windows 11 works the same, but that’s a relatively new system. Windows 10 at the launch completely wasn’t aware of the button. The Game Bar, which includes all of the controls on the screen, a performance monitor and a touchpad.

In the triggers no advanced technology has developed such a soft touch. This makes it easier for you to find the sweet spot when you use the trigger on a telecharger, but you can relax for long periods. Sony has Microsoft beat here. The dual-Sense controllers can reduce the resistance of the game to increase the gameplay immersion. But the controller’s thumbsticks are fairly resistant. They are precise, easy to operate, and they snap back to center quickly without bounce.

The new Xbox Wireless Controller (2020) [above] has some welcome design tweaks from the Xbox One-era controller [below].

The new d-pad is not as elaborate as the larger circular pad on the Elite model, but still isn’t quite much better than the older model. It’s a huge improvement for games like fighters thatrely on d-pads. While the cross-style d-pad is mushi, it’s not surprising that tactility is adding noise. The same high tactility is carries through to the other buttons; however, this question never arises if you have pressed hard enough to keep it quiet, but it is loud. A new controller with unmashed buttons is likely to be a little more clicky but even comparing the upgraded Xbox Wireless Controller to the slightly used 2016 variant, the new design is more pronounced. If you gamble around others, you’ll get angry with the more ognitive clicking.

Xbox Wireless Controller 2020: Compatibility.

A controller has the choice for wired and wireless connections.

Ryan Whitwam

The controller, which was introduced along with the Series X and S, was designed to work perfectly with the consoles. There’s not a problem with it. It means you won’t buy a USB dongle in the boxthis unit can connect directly to a multitude of devices.

As long as you can set up the pair button next to your USB-C, pick it up on the phone or on your computer. You can also double-tap the button to take the controller back to your Xbox (if you’ve got one). If you don’t want to be careful with Bluetooth, the new USB-C port allows you to wire the controller to your PC. As well as those spec-compliant USB-C cables, we tried both A-to-C and C-to-C cables successfully.

Windows is provided with support for the Xbox controller, so no additional setups and apps are required. You can also play games with macOS, but it won’t have the same system-level integrations that Windows has as the game bar, the audio output or the firmware update support.

The Android and iOS version have added some more controllers, so this is a straightforward experience over Bluetooth. Microsofts support page claims Android phones can not connect to the controller with a USB key, but we can confirm that that works in Android 12. You don’t even need batteries in the controller, making this a useful feature for the on-the-go gaming.

Conclusion: Buy this.

The Xbox controller has USB-C capabilities and feels a lot better than the older version. The new d-pad, the newer suspension and the USB-C port are the big changes here and they all contribute to the experience. Oh, and there’s a button for sharing. Yes, the Xbox360 is playing it safe. We would like to see Microsoft push the hardware further with features like a battery-powered battery and a microphone both available on the dual-Sense 5.

Even if you aren’t a console gamer, the Xbox controller could be just what you want. With Bluetooth connectivity, it’s a snap to set it up with a PC or a mobile phone. If your batteries are low, you can use a new USB-C port to connect the old-fashioned way. When you get connected, the Xbox controller is supported for a good time in Windows and is fast as a smartphone.

A lot is the asking price, and it makes the $180 Elite controller a lot harder to sell. If you don’t want the extra pads, you’ll get an existing wireless controller.
